How to Calculate Percentage Uncertainty in Any Measurement

Percentage uncertainty expresses the error in a measurement as a share of the measurement itself, which makes precision comparable across different instruments and quantities. Divide the absolute uncertainty by the measured value and multiply by 100.

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty

  • Absolute uncertainty carries the unit of the measurement: 25.4 ± 0.1 cm.
  • Fractional uncertainty is the ratio 0.1 ÷ 25.4 = 0.0039.
  • Percentage uncertainty is that fraction × 100 = 0.39%.
  • For a single reading, the absolute uncertainty is usually half the smallest scale division.

Combining uncertainties

The rule depends on the operation. When you add or subtract quantities, add their absolute uncertainties. When you multiply or divide, add their percentage uncertainties. When you raise a quantity to a power, multiply its percentage uncertainty by that power — so a radius measured to 2% gives an area with 4% uncertainty and a volume with 6%.

  • Measure a larger quantity: timing ten oscillations divides the timing uncertainty by ten.
