How Volleyball Hitting Percentage Is Calculated
Hitting percentage is (kills − attack errors) ÷ total attack attempts, reported as a three-decimal figure such as .313. Unlike most percentages it can be negative, because a hitter who makes more errors than kills falls below zero.
What counts as what
- Kill: an attack that immediately ends the rally in your team's favour.
- Attack error: the ball goes out, into the net, is blocked for a point, or a violation is called.
- Zero attack: the ball stays in play — it counts as an attempt but affects nothing else.

Reading the number
Above .300 is excellent at almost every level, .200 to .300 is solid, and below .100 usually means the attack is being run out of system. Middle blockers tend to post the highest figures because they hit fast, close sets against a single blocker; outside hitters take more low-percentage swings from difficult passes and are judged accordingly.
Hitting percentage versus kill percentage
Kill percentage is kills ÷ attempts and ignores errors entirely, which flatters a high-risk hitter. Hitting percentage subtracts errors and is the standard efficiency statistic in NCAA and FIVB box scores. Quote hitting percentage unless a coach has specifically asked for kill rate.
Improving it
- Better passing produces in-system sets and higher-percentage swings.
- Tool the block or tip when the set is tight instead of forcing the swing.
- Vary shot location — the deep corners beat repeated line shots.
- Reduce net violations and out-of-bounds swings; each error costs twice as much as a zero attack.
