CGPA to Percentage: Conversion Formulas and Which One to Use
There is no single worldwide formula for converting CGPA to a percentage. The most quoted is the CBSE multiplier — percentage = CGPA × 9.5 — but many universities publish their own linear or table-based rule, and the one printed on your transcript is the one that counts.
The main conversion methods
- CBSE 10-point: percentage = CGPA × 9.5. A 8.2 CGPA becomes 77.9%.
- Linear 10-point: percentage = CGPA × 10, used by several Indian universities.
- 4-point scale: percentage = GPA ÷ 4 × 100, so 3.2 becomes 80%.
- Institution tables: some universities map grade bands to percentage ranges instead of multiplying.
Where the 9.5 multiplier comes from
CBSE analysed the marks of students scoring in the top bands across several years and found that the average marks in the five main subjects, divided by the grade point, converged on 9.5. It is an empirical approximation of that cohort, not a mathematical identity — which is why it can overstate a percentage for a student whose profile differs from that average.
Using the number on applications
- Quote the conversion method alongside the figure, e.g. '77.9% (CGPA 8.2 × 9.5, CBSE)'.
- Attach your official grading-scale document; most admissions offices reconvert anyway.
- Never round upward past a threshold — verification failures are treated as misrepresentation.
- For credential evaluation abroad, expect WES or a similar body to produce their own figure.
Key takeaways — CGPA to Percentage Calculator
- CBSE: percentage = CGPA × 9.5; linear scales divide by the maximum instead.
- Use the method your institution publishes, and cite it.
- A converted percentage is an estimate — the underlying CGPA is the official record.
